Invitation of Applications for the Award of Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowships for the academic year 2010 offered by Commonwealth Secretariat, U. K.
Applications are invited from permanent faculty members working in recognized Universities/ institutions/ Colleges including Medical Institutions for the award of Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowships for six months for the year 2010 offered by Commonwealth Secretariat, U.K., for the academic year 2010. The fellowships are available in all disciplines including Medicine and Dentistry. The fellowships are not available for study towards higher degree and are not intended purely for discrete research projects.
Eligibility-:
Citizenship and Residency : Candidates should be citizen of India.
Qualification Requirement : Candidates must hold a doctorate degree. In the fields of medicine and dentistry, have qualified before 1st October, 2000.
Experience : Candidates should have at least five years experience as a staff member of the nominating University or similar institution in India.
In the fields of Medicine and dentistry, have held a consultancy or equivalent post for at least five years.
Be available, by 1st October, 2010 to commence their fellowship in the United Kingdom.
Duration : Duration of fellowship is six months.
Other details of the fellowship along with the prescribed form is available in all the University level institutions/ UGC Headquarters (IC-II Section, Room No.505)/ UGC Regional Offices. The same can also be downloaded from UGC website (www.ugc.ac.in) and (www.cscuk.org.uk)
Eligible candidates may apply in the prescribed format duly nominated by Vice-Chancellor (in case of University/ College) and Head of the Institution (in case of institution). Direct applications from the applicants will not be entertained.

British Council Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships 2009
Dr Manmonhan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, is a graduate and Honorary Fellow of St John’s College. He is widely acknowledged as the architect of the economic reforms that have helped propel India onto the World Stage. In honour of Dr Singh St John’s College, the University of Cambridge launched the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships in Delhi last year. These awards will enable academically outstanding Indian students to come to St. John’s College, University of Cambridge to study for doctoral degrees in subjects like Science & Technology, Economics and Social Sciences.
Applications in Aerospace Engineering and Energy Studies will be of particular interest
Eligibility Criteria
An Indian national with a valid Indian passport and currently based in India. Below 35 years of age as on 31 December 2008. Not already had significant exposure to UK education or received UK government funding.
Should hold a Master’s (postgraduate) degree from a reputed/recognised India university/institution with a First Class award (UG and PG) in the relevant subject/field
Evidence of leadership qualities (to be assessed from personal statements e.g. extracurricular activities and/or evidence of having made a difference to the country/society/participation in symposia in the relevant subject, or peer reviewed publication in the area.)
Keen to pursue and should have identified a full time Doctoral Research degree from the University of Cambridge commencing by September/October 2009
Fluent in spoken and written English
Able to fulfil any other admission criteria laid down by the university.

Application process
It is the responsibility of the applicants to identify a suitable Doctoral programme and supervisor at the University of Cambridge, apply for a place for September/October 2009 and secure admission.
1. Identify a suitable doctoral programme and supervisor at the University of Cambridge.
2. Applicants to visit the Board of Graduate Studies (BoGs) website and make formal application to the University at the same time as to the Dr Man Mohan Singh Scholarships.
3. Applicants to select St John’s College as their first choice College on their BoGs application form.
4. Applicants to indicate on their BoGs form that they are applying for the Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships, but also to complete the section applying for funding from the University.
5. Apply for the Scholarship on the prescribed format by 31 December 2008 and submit it to the British Council. Please visit the British Council Website to download the application form.
Notes:
• Only those applicants who get an offer of admission at St John’s College will be eligible for the award of the Scholarship.
• Candidates should NOT approach St John’s College directly at this stage.
Selection
Candidates for these scholarships are selected through a process of short listing from the applications received by the British Council, followed by personal interviews, which will be held in New Delhi .
Subsequent to the interviews the selection committee identifies the required number of candidates for the awards. The decision of the selection committee will be final. Selection results will be communicated within a month following the interview.
Post selection
Pre-departure briefings, UK visa and travel arrangements for the selected candidates will be co-ordinated by the British Council.
General Notes
The British Council will acknowledge receipt of applications through the emails provided on the application form. For this purpose, applicants are requested to provide their latest email ids. However, the British Council will not be responsible for failure of on-line delivery.
The British Council will further contact only the short-listed candidates inviting them for interviews. Applicants are requested not to contact the British Council office directly.
Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in New Delhi in April 2009. Candidates will be expected to make their own travel and accommodation arrangements.

Commonwealth Scholarship for indian students
Applications are invited from Indian nationals either through http://www.education.nic.in/ or on plain paper in the FORMAT GIVEN BELOW for nominations from India for the award of Commonwealth Scholarship tenable in United Kingdom from October 2009 for higher studies/research/specialized training in the subject mentioned below in the United Kingdom. Up to Sixty (60) nominations are to be sent to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission for final selection to be made by them. Out of these not more than 35 (thirty five) are for one year Master’s Degree Course/Six months clinical training and twenty two (25) are for three year’s Ph.D. Course and 1 year Research on Split-Site basis.
II. ELIGIBILITY
The candidate should not be more than 40 years of age as on 31.10.2008 and fulfill the minimum qualifications as per Para (IV) below.
III. LEVEL OF COURSE
These scholarships will be awarded for studies leading to either: -
(1) SIX MONTH CLINICAL TRAINING/RESEARCH/SPECIALISATION (For MBBS, MS, MD degree holders only)

(2) (i) ONE YEAR TAUGHT MASTER’S COURSES OR EQUIVALENT DEGREE, (ii) THREE YEARS DOCTORAL DEGREE (iii) ONE YEAR RESEARCH ON A SPLIT SITE BASIS, TOWARDS A Ph. D. REGISTERED AT A UNIVERSITY IN HOME COUNTRY:
(A) ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY:

4. Communication Engineering 5. Biotechnology or Biochemical Engineering

The candidates must have completed tertiary education in English Medium :-

One should hold or able to produce the certificate of Bachelor’s Degree by 31st August 2009 in the subject field concerned (indicated above) securing 55% or above marks in Humanities and Social Science group and 60% or above marks in Medical, Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture Group. Candidate should give one page academic justification for pursuing the course in U.K.
Candidates who wish to undertake postgraduate study in Business and/or Management should before applying for a Commonwealth Scholarship, have taken the Graduate Management Admission Test (Princeton Test). One should hold or able to produce the certificate of Master’s Degree by 31st August 2009 in the concerned subject fields (indicated above) securing 55% or above marks in Humanities and Social Science group and 60% or above marks in the relevant subjects in Medical, Engineering and Technology, Science and Agriculture group.
V. VALUE OF AWARD
Each scholarship provides: -
(A) Student concessionary or other approved air fare to the United Kingdom by the most direct and economical route and return on expiry of the scholarship (the cost of journey made before receipt of award will not normally be reimbursed nor can fares be paid for a scholar’s dependents).
(B) Approved tuition and examination fees.
(C) A personal maintenance allowance payable monthly.
(D) A grant for books and apparatus in the first year of study and for a subsequent full year also; and a grant towards the expenses preparing a thesis of dissertation, where applicable;
(E) A grant for expenses of approved travel within the U.K.
(F) An initial clothing grant for most scholars on first arrival from tropical developing countries;
(G) Where a host institution has in advance declared and the Commission has accepted, the need for fieldwork outside the United Kingdom, a grant towards the cost of such fieldwork, which shall not normally exceed one economy and tourist class return fare to the fieldwork location. Scholars for whom fieldwork fares are provided to their home country shall not be entitled to a mid – term homeward fare;
(H) For married scholars selected by the Commission for awards exceeding 12 months, a marriage allowance per mensem is payable provided that the husband and wife are residing together at the same address in the United Kingdom. It is not paid when a husband or wife of the scholars is also in receipt of an award, or is in paid employment. For such married couples accompanied by their children, a child allowance is payable for the first, second and third child under the age of 16 provided they are residing with their parents. A scholar who is unaccompanied by spouse but accompanied by children for whom he/she is legally responsible, shall receive the equivalent of the spouse’s allowance for the first child, and child allowances for the second and third child, irrespective of the length of tenure of award.
Scholar’s emoluments are not subject to United Kingdom income tax, but holders and their spouses may be liable for the payment at least in part of any Council tax levied by the local authority where they live.
