HBCSE Ph.D in Science Education 2014

Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education- NBCSE Ph.D. Programme in Science Education

HBCSE carries out research and development in education in science, technology and mathematics from primary school up to undergraduate level. This research is informed by current perspectives in cognitive science, developmental psychology, history and philosophy of science and socio-cultural aspects of science and education. Pre-Ph.D. programs in these areas serve to orient students who may enter with varied backgrounds.


Science and maths teachers and educators are welcome to apply. They would spend a minimum of two years at HBCSE to complete their course work and initiate their research work.

Development of scientific and mathematical thinking in children

Design and technology in the school curriculum

Visual and spatial modes in learning

Socio-cultural and gender factors in learning

Structure and dynamics of knowledge

Environment education

Innovative curricula, laboratories and teaching methods



Eligibility : M.Sc. (in any subject), M.S.W., M.A. (in Cognitive Science, Psychology, Education) or B.Tech./B.E./ M.B.B.S. or equivalent.

JNCASR Summer Research Fellowship Programme 2014


JNCASR Summer Research Fellowship Programme 2014

Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research- JNCASR invites applications for its Summer Research Fellowship Programme 2014, for motivated and talented Indian students in Science and Engineering.

The Centre offers summer fellowships for two months to bright undergraduate and MSc students (renewable for a second year for selected students). This programme has proved to be popular and competitive; each year, about 5000 students from all over India apply for the 120 fellowships awarded. Fifty fellowships are supported by the Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, fifteen by the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, New Delhi, and the rest by the Centre. Students are placed with research groups at the Centre or with scientists elsewhere in India. They are paid travel expenses and a monthly stipend of Rs. 6000. Selected students get the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research, and several summer projects have led to publications in leading journals. Many of the summer students of past years have gone on to pursue graduate studies and a research career, at the JNCASR or at another leading university.

Opportunities for BTech/BE/MTech/ME/MS MSc graduates for Research Centre in Earth system and climate sciences

The Centre for Advanced training in earth system sciences and Climate (CAT - ESSC) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences hosted by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is looking for scientist trainees with outstanding academic background. IITM is committed to develop world class research expertise for understanding and exploring unresolved scientific issues on climate science. The other institutions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences such as IMD, NCMRWF, INCOIS, NIOT, ICMAM, CMLRE and NCAOR also specialize in different areas of earth system sciences and technology. The main objective of CAT - ESSC is to generate a large pool of trained and dedicated earth and earth system scientists with in-depth hands-on expertise on individual physical processes of the land, ocean, atmosphere, biosphere and cryosphere with special emphasis on climate modeling. For the motivated candidates, the training will offer considerable scope to realize their full potential in this highly challenging field. The candidates recruited will be provided this induction training extending to 18 months and on successful completion they will be placed in any one of the Institutes of the Ministry of Earth Science as Scientists in suitable grades (Scientist B/C) based on their basic qualifications and performance. There is option for pursuing MTech or / and PhD Program before or after placement with facilities for career enhancement.

The candidates applying for the training should possess M.Sc/MS/MTech degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Oceanography, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Physics any areas of Earth Sciences or any equivalent disciplines, with Physics and Maths at the B.Sc level or B.Tehc / B.E / M.tech/ M.E in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Electronics or electrical Engg with 60% or more marks at both the graduate and post graduate level. The candidates should be CSIR National Eligibility Test (NET) or the IIT-Graduate Admission Test in Engineering (GATE) qualified. Those who are appearing for the final exams for the qualifying degree or NET/GATE may also apply subject to the condition that they produce the final certificates if and when called for the interview. The applicants should be of Indian origin and the upper age limit is fixed as 28 years (30 for MTechs) as on 31st march, 2011 with relaxation as per eligibility.

The applications recd will be screened and the candidates to be called for the interview will be shortlisted based on their overall merit. The interviews will be held in Pune in July 2011, Candidates called for interview will be paid sleeper class train fare. The selected candidates inducted in the training program will be paid a consolidated remuneration of Rs.25,000/- per month. Hostel facilities will be available to the trainees. The no. of trainees in the first batch is tentatively fixed as Twenty. The training programme for the selected candidates is scheduled to start by early Aug, 2011.
