General Astronomy Course by MPBIFR

M. P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, Bangalore is going to conduct a "General Astronomy" course for the general public from January 19 to February 4, 2015 in the eveing.

The medium of instruction will be in English.

The syllabus for this course is framed to cover the basics involved in understanding the astronomical concepts like identification of constellations, measurement of brightness and distances of stars, types of stars, celestial coordinates, optical telescopes, Astrobiology, etc. It also includes an exposure to the observational techniques and the usage of astronomical telescopes.

Students will be given an exposure to skywatch during the period of the course. Star watching sessions will be conducted after the classes, subject to clear sky conditions. After completing the course, certificates will be awarded to the participants.

Interested students can download the application from the internet, fill it and send it by post to the address mentioned below along with a local cheque / DD drawn in favour of "M. P. Birla Institute of Fundamental Research" (payable at Bangalore). Fee structure includes registration and admission fee.

Interested students may also contact the Director and collect the application forms from the institute (address given below). Students can personally pay the prescribed fee (payable by cash / local cheque / DD).

NEST 2014 Admission Process

National Entrance Screening Test-NEST 2014 Admission to5 year Integrated MSc Programme in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics

National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is a compulsory test for students seeking admission to National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CBS), Mumbai. Both NISER and UM-DAE CBS have been started by Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India in 2007. Their mandate is to train scientific manpower for carrying out cutting edge scientific research and for providing input to scientific programmes of Department of Atomic Energy and other applied science institutions in the country. The test is conducted in 37 centers across India.

Integrated Science Education and Research Center (ISERC), Visva Bharati, is also participating in NEST 2014 and will admit students for its Integrated MSc course from the Merit List of NEST 2014.

Eligibility :

* Candidates in General and OBC category should be born on or after July 22, 1994. The age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ ST/ Physically Disabled (PD) candidates.

* Class XII qualifying examination should be passed in either 2012 or 2013. Candidates appearing in 2014 are also eligible. (Where only Letter Grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the respective Admission Committees will be final.)

* At least 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination from any recognized Board in India. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates and for Persons with Disability (PD), the minimum requirement is 55%.

Students admitted to NISER & UM-DAE CBS are eligible for DST-INSPIRE (Govt.of India) fellowship of Rs 60000/ p.er year and Rs 20000/- p.a. for summer internship.

Institute of Physics Bhubaneswar Ph.D program and the Pre-doctoral program Admissions 2013

Institute of Physics invites applications for its regular Ph.D program in the above-mentioned areas from candidates, who satisfy the following criteria:
* M.Sc. in Physics with minimum 55% marks (in aggregate)

* A valid GATE score with a rank upto 200 or, candidates who have qualified CSIR–UGC Test (NET) within the last one year or candidates who are offered DST-Inspire fellowship for carrying out Ph.D program.


Candidates who have qualified JEST-2013 and hold a rank up to 174 need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. Those candidates who hold a rank beyond 174 in JEST-2013 but satisfy the criteria as mentioned above, may also send the application.

All eligible candidates, whether through JEST-2013 or through direct application against this advertisement, will have to appear for a short written test on the morning of 28th June, 2013. Result of the written test will be published on the same day and short-listed candidates will have to appear for a personal interview between June 28th–30th, 2013. Final merit list will be prepared based on the scores of both the written test and the interview.

JETS 2013 for admission to Ph.D / Integrated Ph.D Programme in Physics or Theoretical Computer Science

Eligibility :
Physics:
Candidates should have M.Sc. in Physics or M.Sc. / M.E. / M.Tech. in related disciplines.

Theoretical Computer Science:
Candidates should have M.Sc./ M.E. / M.Tech. / M.C.A. in Computer Science and related disciplines, and should be interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science.

To Apply :

* Applications for the JEST exam can be made online or by ordinary post.

* To apply by post, please write to JEST 2013, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics.

* To apply online, applicants must create an account using a valid e-mail ID. This account will remain valid from the time of account creation till one month after the date of declaration of results, for that year. Email ids are locked to the created account and to the application, and will be used for all communications with the applicants. Therefore, the email id should be active and must not be changed during this period.

Tentative date of examination is 17th February 2013.

Duration: The normal duration of the Integrated M.Sc-Ph.D programme will be 6 years, including the minimum 2 years for the Master's degree

Institute of Plasma Research-IPR Summer School Program 2012

The Summer School Program of the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) will be held from 28th May 2012 to 6th July 2012. If you are interested in pursuing a research career in Physics and Technology after your M. Sc / B.E. / B.Tech, here is an opportunity to spend a six weeks of your summer vacation at IPR.

In this program you can learn about Plasma (matter in an ionized state) and its applications in nuclear fusion and industries. The course comprises of lectures on plasma science, fusion and industrial technologies, and a short project related to Plasma Science/Technology. The participants will have to work on a specific project in association with a faculty member of the institute. This will present them a huge opportunity of interacting with the scientists at IPR.

If selected, you will be paid a stipend of Rs.10,500/- for the entire period and a
to and fro train fare (sleeper class ) by the shortest route. You will also be provided with a free hostel accommodation (limited seats are available) during this period.

Eligibility :
Students who have completed their 1st Year M. Sc. or 4th Year Integrated M. Sc .in Physics or Applied Physics or Integrated M.Sc. Institute of Physics Pre-Doctoral/Ph.D Programme 2010

Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research activity in the Institute centers around the areas of theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy physics.
One of the important objectives of the Institute has been to train and guide young scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular one year Pre-doctoral (post M.Sc.) course work and Doctoral research program for those who successfully complete the Pre-Doctoral course. The Institute campus has hostels for the Pre-doctoral and the Doctoral scholars.
The Institute of Physics invites application for the Pre-doctoral Program from Indian nationals having the following qualifications:
M.Sc. Physics with minimum 55% marks (in aggregate).
(A) GATE qualifiers with minimum score of 95 percentile and having current validity OR CSIR / UGC- NET qualifiers (for research fellowship) within last one year.
Candidates who have qualified JEST-2010 with a minimum score of 95 Percentile need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a candidate has scored less than 95 percentile in JEST-2010 but satisfies any of the criteria for GATE/NET as above, he/she should also send the application.
Candidates appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., who have already qualified in GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET can also apply. They should submit the relevant proof before joining the pre-doctoral programme. In case of non-availability of the M.Sc. results at the time of joining, the admission will be treated as provisional.
Application in prescribed format (given below), should be sent only by E-mail as DOC or PDF file latest by 20th April, 2010 to admit@iopb.res.in.

Admission Procedure
