HOMI BHABHA NATIONAL INSTITUTE (HBNI)invites applications from postgraduate M.E,M.Tech for the award of fellowships under the DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Ph.D. (DGFS-Ph.D.) for pursuing research in an Engineering discipline leading to the award of Ph.D. degree of HBNI.
Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a Deemed University comprising of four R&D Centres and six grant-in-aid institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as its Constituent Institutions (CIs). The R&D Centres which are CIs of HBNI are
(1) Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai;
(2) Indira Gandhi Cenre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam;
(3) Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata;
(4) Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore.
The terms and conditions of the Fellowships are:
1. The DGFS-Ph.D Fellowship is tenable for three years for doing Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline in one of the four R & D centres listed above;
2. The amount of Fellowship payable under the scheme is Rs.18000/- (likely to be increased) per month besides house rent and medical benefits as per rules,
3. The Fellow will carry research under the joint supervision of two guides, one having strength in basic research and the other in technology development,
4. After the award of the Ph.D., the DGFS-Ph.D. fellows will have the option to appear for selection under K.S.Krishnan Research Associateship (KSKRA) programme without going through further process of screening. KSKRAs are selected every year and paid a stipend of Rs.20,000/- (likely to be revised) + benefits for a maximum period of 2 years. Anytime during the 2nd year of associateship, subject to satisfactory performance, the KSKRAs will be absorbed in one of the R&D centres of DAE as above and appointed in the grade Scientific Officer (D/E).
ELIGIBILITY
a. Qualifying Degree and other academic qualifications:
Candidates should possess M. E. / M. Tech. degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Computer engineering disciplines with minimum 60% Marks in B. E. /B. Tech. and 60% marks in M. E. / M. Tech. as declared by the University or employed by it for declaring class OR equivalent CGPI (converted to % Marks by multiplying with 100/x if the CGPA is on x points scale).
b. Age limit:
The candidates desirous of availing DGFS-Ph.D. Fellowship should have been born on or after September 1, 1981. Age limit is relaxable by three years for OBC and by five years for SC/ST applicants.
c. Nationality:
Applicant should be an Indian citizen.
SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants who fulfill the above mentioned eligibility criteria, and whose M.Tech. projects are of relevance to DAE shall be called for an interview to be conducted in the BARC, Mumbai in September 2009. The candidates should be prepared for a 10 minutes presentation on their research interest. Outstation applicants called for interview will be paid, after their interview, to and fro sleeper class train fare by shortest route, or actual fare, whichever is less.

Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), a research-led university, was established in 2007 by an Act of Gujarat State Legislature. The University is promoted by Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) as a unique public-private educational and research initiative. PDPU aims to be a leading global University to develop the knowledge of science, technology, management and environment for the advancement of quality of life of mankind in general, and in relation to the domains of gas and energy in particular. Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University has at present three Schools and a Centre. It primarily aims at preparing and motivating students for careers as academicians, researchers, scholars, entrepreneurs and thinkers. Candidates for the Ph.D degree must demonstrate substantial scholarship, high attainment in a particular field of knowledge, and the ability to carry out independent investigation and present the results in a dissertation.
Selection process for Ph.D students is designed with an aim to have students with a combination of academic excellence, leadership, research potential and individual background and perspective. The Process will evaluate all aspect of what the candidate can add to the future of education and research in areas of sciences, technology, management, humanities, arts and social science.
Selected Candidates as per the Ph.D programme shall be entitled for
• Research & Teaching Assistantship of Rs. 20,000/- to Rs. 25,000/- per month.
• Professional Development Assistantship of Rs. 15,000/- & Rs. 20,000/- per annum for
knowledge enrichment
• Professional Development Assistantship upto Rs. 1,00,000/- for presenting research
papers at National/International conferences.

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF PLANT GENOME RESEARCH
Admission to Ph.D. Programme for 2009-2010
National Institute of Plant Genome Research, is an Autonomous Research Institution, funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and conducts basic and applied research in the frontier areas of plant biology. The Institute invites applications from candidates who have completed or will be completing M. Sc. (by August 11, 2009) in Life Science or equivalent in related disciplines with minimum 55% marks, and have cleared the CSIR-UGC NET exam / DBT-JRF (selected through BET/BINC) / ICMR NET exam for JRF (with a valid Junior Research Fellowship as on September 1, 2009), for conducting advanced researches in the frontier areas of Plant Science such as Developmental Biology, Signal Transduction, Stress Biology, Structural, Functional and Nutritional Genomics, Developing Transgenic Crop Plants etc. Reservations are as per statutory norms. The selection will be made on the basis of interview only.

Admission to Ph.D. Programme for 2009-2010
National Institute of Plant Genome Research, is an Autonomous Research Institution, funded by Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, and conducts basic and applied research in the frontier areas of plant biology. The Institute invites applications from candidates who have completed or will be completing M. Sc. (by August 11, 2009) in Life Science or equivalent in related disciplines with minimum 55% marks, and have cleared the CSIR-UGC NET exam / DBT-JRF (selected through BET/BINC) / ICMR NET exam for JRF (with a valid Junior Research Fellowship as on September 1, 2009), for conducting advanced researches in the frontier areas of Plant Science such as Developmental Biology, Signal Transduction, Stress Biology, Structural, Functional and Nutritional Genomics, Developing Transgenic Crop Plants etc. Reservations are as per statutory norms. Eligibility-:
Students with a B. Sc/B.E/B.Tech/M.B.B.S degree from any recognized university/institute/ College can apply for the Integrated Ph. D programme in Biological, Chemical, Earth, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. They need to secure a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent grades in their qualifying examinations. Those who are appearing in the final examination of their degree course can also apply; for them, the eligibility marks are 60% in aggregate, based on the marks obtained in the undergraduate examinations held so far.
Students applying for an Integrated Ph. D Programme are required to have the following subject(s) in the undergraduate courses:

The candidate should write PBIR with his/her chosen discipline on the top of the envelope while sending the application form (e.g., PBIR-Mathematics). Essential Items Accompanying the Application
Apart from attested copies of all marks-sheets (secondary examination onward), the following documents must accompany the application:
(i) confidential letters of assessment of the applicant in the prescribed form [ doc, pdf ], from two teachers who have taught courses and would be able to evaluate the student as a potential research worker. The teachers should seal the envelopes and sign across the flaps;
(ii) a self-assessment by the student in his/her own words;
(iii) a plan of work (within 250 words) in the applicant’s own words (do not download from the internet or copy from other sources) that the student would like to carry out in the Ph. D Programme. Landline phone no. and/or mobile no. are essential. Incomplete applications may not be considered.
Mode of Selection
Institute-level committee(s) will scrutinize all the applications, and prepare a shortlist of about 70 candidates, who may be called for interview. The Institute will finally declare the list of selected candidates on the Institute website. The Institute will provide second-class (sleeper) train fare and hostel accommodation to students appearing in the interview.
Student Intake
In the Academic Session 2009-2010, a total of 22 students may be selected, covering all sciences.
A tentative distribution is: Physics (5), Chemistry (5), Biology (5), Earth Sciences (5) and Mathematics (2).
