IIMs CAT 2009 Application Process
The Indian Institutes of Management will conduct Common Admission Test-CAT during Sunday,28 November-Monday,7 December 2009. Cat is conducted by IIMs as a pre-requisite for admissions to various management programmes of IIMs. These programmes are-:
A. Post Graduate Programmes in Management
IIM Ahmedabad PGP, PGP-ABM and PGP-PMP
IIM Bangalore PGP, PGSEM and PGPPM
IIM Calcutta PGP-PGDM and PGP - PGDCM

B. Fellow Programmes in Management (FPM) [equivalent to Ph.D.] of IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Indore, IIM Kozhikode, and IIM Lucknow.

CAT 2009 Eligibility-: The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA)categories], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the practice followed by the university/institution from where the candidate has obtained the degree. In case the candidates are awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion of grades/CGPA to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/ institution from where they have obtained the bachelor's degree. In case the university/ institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.

Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree/equivalent qualification examination and those who have completed degree requirements and are awaiting results can also apply. IIMs may verify eligibility at various stages of the selection process, the details of which are provided at Selection Process of IIMs on www.catiim.in

Prospective candidates must maintain a valid email account throughout the selection process.

To Apply-:The CAT 2009 Vouchers can be obtained from branches of Axis Bank and their associated outlets during the period from Wednesday, 9 September 2009 to Thursday, 1 October 2009 for Rs 1400/- (Rs 700/- for SC/ST candidates). Please note that a candidate needs to buy only one CAT 2009 Voucher irrespective of the number of institutes he / she is applying to.

Note that the Voucher must be bought only in the name of the candidate as it appears in the school leaving certificate. If the name has been changed due to events such as marriage, the candidate must show the relevant document such as a marriage certificate and submit a photocopy at the time of the test, interview and at the time of joining a programme. SC and ST candidates must show a copy of their SC/ST Certificates at the time of obtaining the CAT 2009 Voucher from the Axis Bank branches.

Voucher once sold cannot be refunded under any circumstance including but not limited to loss of voucher, inability to read voucher number due to mishandling of the voucher by candidate, candidate being ineligible for taking CAT, CAT not being a pre-requisite for a programme, and rejection of candidate registration due to incomplete and / or wrong information. If the voucher is lost, voucher number is not readable due to mishandling of the voucher by candidate, and / or candidate thinks he / she has made mistake(s) in filling out information during the online registration, then the candidate can purchase a new voucher and re-register online.

Registration for CAT 2009-:
On purchasing the CAT 2009 Voucher, prospective candidates must log on to the website www.catiim.in to register for CAT 2009. The registration window starts on Wednesday, 9 September 2009 and will close on Thursday, 1 October 2009. Details of the registration process are provided at the website given.

Test Centers-:The test will be conducted in venues across many centres. These centres are Ahmedabad. Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi. Durgapur, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, Gurgaon, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jamshedpur, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Patna, Pune, Ranchi, Siliguri, and Varanasi. IIMs reserve the right to change or cancel any test venue /centre and / or change the test window time and dates at their own discretion

More on cat 2009-: The duration of the test is 2 hours and 30 minutes including initial 15 minute tutorial. No breaks will be given during the test. The test consists of questions that evaluate a candidate’s quantitative, verbal, and logical & data interpretive abilities. Therefore, there are a total of three sections in the test. There will be about 60 to 70 questions in the test.

At the test venue, each candidate will be seated at a desk with a computer terminal and he/she will be provided with a scratch paper for calculations. After the test, candidate must leave the scratch paper at the desk. Rough work cannot be done on any other paper/sheet, as nothing will be allowed inside the testing room.

IIT Kharagpur to Establish Medical School

IIT Kharagpur to Establish Medical School
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) has signed a preliminary agreement with the University of California, San Diego Health Sciences to collaborate in the development of an International Medical Center (IMC) at the IIT.

The goal of the agreement is to jointly establish a state-of-the-art medical center at IIT Kharagpur, which will be the first-of-its kind between a U.S. University and an Indian Institution.

Under the agreement, a 300-bed, state-of-the-art hospital would be built on land provided by IIT Kharagpur.

The International Academic Medical Center (IMC) will include a research and development center, as well as an infrastructure for the training of health care providers.

UC San Diego will partner in developing the IMC, providing leadership and training in such areas as nursing, hospital administration, health information systems, pharmaceutical practices, telemedicine, quality assessment and safety, among others.

Joint CSIR-UGC Test For Junior Research Fellowship And Eligibility for Lectureship(NET) December 2009

CSIR will hold the Joint CSIR-UGC Test 20th December, 2009 for determining the eligibility of the Indian national candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/national laboratory/institution of higher learning and research, as applicable

A candidate may apply either for ‘JRF + Lectureship’ both or for ‘Lectureship (LS) only’ He/She may indicate his/her preference in the O.M.R. Application Form/Online Application, as the case may be. CSIR may consider candidates applying for ‘JRF + LS’ for ‘Lectureship only’ depending on number of fellowships available and performance in the test subject to the condition that they fulfill the laid down eligibility criterion. If a candidate is found to be over-age for JRF (NET) he/she will automatically be considered for Lectureship (NET) only.

Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF – NET) and the second of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET), will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test. Candidates qualifying for JRF (NET), will also be eligible for Lectureship (NET). The candidates qualifying for Lectureship will be eligible for recruitment as Lecturers as well as for JRF-ship in a Scheme/Project, if otherwise suitable as per the eligible criteria of that Scheme/Project. However, they will not be eligible for Regular JRF-NET Fellowship. They will be eligible to pursue Ph.D. programme with or without any fellowship other than JRF-NET. Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association. The candidates declared eligible for Junior Research Fellowship under UGC scheme will be governed by UGC rules/regulations in this regard.

The final result of this test may be declared sometime in the month of March 2010 and fellowship to successful candidates could be awarded from 01.07.2010.

Candidates attending counselling should make an initial payment of Rs.5300/- for General (Rs.1150/- for SC/SCA/ST candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu) by DD / Cash at the time of counselling at the bank counter available in the counselling centre for registration. The DD should be drawn in favour of The Director (Admissions), Anna University Chennai, payable at Chennai. The initial payment of Rs.5000/- or Rs.1000/- only will be adjusted towards tuition fee at the time of admission in the respective institutions.

HOMI BHABHA NATIONAL INSTITUTE-HBNI DGFS-Ph.D 2009
HOMI BHABHA NATIONAL INSTITUTE (HBNI)invites applications from postgraduate M.E,M.Tech for the award of fellowships under the DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Ph.D. (DGFS-Ph.D.) for pursuing research in an Engineering discipline leading to the award of Ph.D. degree of HBNI.

Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is a Deemed University comprising of four R&D Centres and six grant-in-aid institutions of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) as its Constituent Institutions (CIs). The R&D Centres which are CIs of HBNI are

(1) Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai;

(2) Indira Gandhi Cenre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam;

(3) Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata;

(4) Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore.

The terms and conditions of the Fellowships are:

1. The DGFS-Ph.D Fellowship is tenable for three years for doing Ph.D. in an Engineering discipline in one of the four R & D centres listed above;

2. The amount of Fellowship payable under the scheme is Rs.18000/- (likely to be increased) per month besides house rent and medical benefits as per rules,

3. The Fellow will carry research under the joint supervision of two guides, one having strength in basic research and the other in technology development,

4. After the award of the Ph.D., the DGFS-Ph.D. fellows will have the option to appear for selection under K.S.Krishnan Research Associateship (KSKRA) programme without going through further process of screening. KSKRAs are selected every year and paid a stipend of Rs.20,000/- (likely to be revised) + benefits for a maximum period of 2 years. Anytime during the 2nd year of associateship, subject to satisfactory performance, the KSKRAs will be absorbed in one of the R&D centres of DAE as above and appointed in the grade Scientific Officer (D/E).

ELIGIBILITY
a. Qualifying Degree and other academic qualifications:
Candidates should possess M. E. / M. Tech. degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Metallurgical, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation or Computer engineering disciplines with minimum 60% Marks in B. E. /B. Tech. and 60% marks in M. E. / M. Tech. as declared by the University or employed by it for declaring class OR equivalent CGPI (converted to % Marks by multiplying with 100/x if the CGPA is on x points scale).

b. Age limit:
The candidates desirous of availing DGFS-Ph.D. Fellowship should have been born on or after September 1, 1981. Age limit is relaxable by three years for OBC and by five years for SC/ST applicants.

c. Nationality:
Applicant should be an Indian citizen.

SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants who fulfill the above mentioned eligibility criteria, and whose M.Tech. projects are of relevance to DAE shall be called for an interview to be conducted in the BARC, Mumbai in September 2009. The candidates should be prepared for a 10 minutes presentation on their research interest. Outstation applicants called for interview will be paid, after their interview, to and fro sleeper class train fare by shortest route, or actual fare, whichever is less.

For the sixth year since inception, we once again invite applications for scholarships from young women across India. Candidates can get a scholarship of up to Rs. 1 lakh to pursue their graduation, post graduation and doctorate studies in India.

India's largest IT Scholarship Program— '19th Bhavishya Jyoti Scholarship Test' will be conducted on Sunday, September 13, 2009 by leading Global Talent Development Corporation, NIIT, across the country.

The 19-year old Annual Scholarship program rewards fee waivers to meritorious students and graduates desirous of building successful careers in diverse industries that require Information Technology skills. UGC Important Public Notice

University Grants Commission-UGC IMPORTANT PUBLIC NOTICE

It has come to the notice of the University Grants Commission (UGC) that some of the Deemed Universities are opening Off-Campus(s)/ Off-Shore Campus(s)/ New Department(s)/ Study Centre(s) and starting courses (other than allied courses and approved by UGC and Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Development, New Delhi) without the prior approval of UGC and Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. In some cases, it has been found that after submission of the proposal for Off-Campus(s)/ new departments)/ new institutions) to the Government of India and UGC, the deemed universities started admitting students in these centers without waiting for the final approval from UGC/ Government of India. Some of them are also imparting education under distance mode without the approval of the UGC-AICTE-DEC Joint Committee and even through franchisee agreement with private institutions. Some of the Deemed Universities are reported to have given affiliation to Colleges/ Institutions against approved policy of UGC.

Students, parents and the general public at large are, therefore, cautioned and advised not to take admission in the unapproved Off-Campus(s)/ Off-Shore Campus(s)/ New Department(s) / Study Centre(s), Colleges/ Institutions affiliated to deemed to be universities and courses run under distance mode (without the approval of UGC-AICTE-DEC Joint Committee). Study Centres established and maintained by the deemed universities are only for the purpose of advising, counseling or for rendering any other assistance required by the students used in the context of distance education and no students should be admitted in these centres. The information related to UGC/ Government of India approved off-campus(s), off-shore campus(s), constituent unit(s) and institution(s) under the ambit of deemed universities is available on the UGC website (www.ugc.ac.in). Students desirous to take admission in any of these Deemed Universities and / or" their off-campus(s), off-shore campus(s), constituent unit(s) and institution(s) under their ambit must first check the status of the approval on the UGC website. They are also requested to bring any violation of the above to the notice of the Joint Secretary (CPP-I), UGC for taking necessary action.

IGNOU & IRT Rail Transport Management Programmes

Indira Gandhi National Open University-IGNOU & Institute of Rail Transport-IRT to launch new programme in Rail Transport Management

Indira Gandhi National Open University recently signed a broad perspective MoU with Institute of Rail Transport (IRT) to develop a gross framework of training and academic collaboration. The principal objectives are to develop high quality educative programmes of international standard in rail transport management.

The MoU was signed by Dr US Tolia, Registrar of IGNOU and Dr AP Ramanan, Executive Director of IRT. The MoU envisages that appropriate mechanisms will evolved for effective generation of skilled officials in management of the complex world of rail transport, relative application of ICTs, ports, containers, logistics management and many other associated training and education. A slew of academic programmes in various levels from short-term trainings to Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s and Research programmes will be offered at all IRT study centres spread across the country along the railways with a view to democratising employment-oriented education and training.

IRT has trusted training culture in rail transport management over decades. It has institutes in all corners of the country. It runs four dedicated training cum education programmes in the rail transport domain. Boosted by IGNOU’s expertise and distance education pedagogy and supported by IGNOU certification, IRT hopes to hone its students’ skills further.

IGNOU’s Centre for Corporate Education, Training and Consultancy (CCET&C), which will join the IRT experts in the Joint Coordination Committee to develop the framework, will introduce the university’s assignment components for continuous learning inputs, evolve and set up study centre concept suitable to IRT context and introduce the latest ICTs in the pedagogy. IGNOU will define criteria of admission, finalise the registration processes with the IRT, design courses, delivery of training and education, review mechanism, redesign IRT’s existing courses suitable for certification and develop effective students support network using the IRT facilities across the Indian railways.

The IRT will bear the entire cost of the project. It will identify experts in rail transport and develop materials for training. The IRT will also identify study centres where the courses would be run, appoint coordinators, at all training centres, identify training areas, pay consultancy fees to faculty, appoint exclusive consultancy at CCET&C and also financially support at least two Research Assistants for their PhDs.

The broad framework is likely to generate a good number of skilled handlers and experts in rail transport areas

FYJC Online Admission Goes Offline

The Maharashtra state education department wound up its FYJC online admission machinery and threw the doors open for all students to apply offline once again. “Those unhappy with what they have been assigned via the online process as well as those who haven’t signed up at any college so far or been allotted a college now have the opportunity to try and find a seat for themselves. No additional fee will be charged for application forms,’’ said Bhalchandra Desle, education director.

The offline admission process will go on till August 8, and all colleges have been asked to start by August 10.

* Double Degree Postgraduate Program (DDP) is designed for the advantage of Student Community through which students can acquire M. Tech. degree from JNTU Kakinada and M. Sc. degree from Blekinge Institute
of Technology, Sweden. This Postgraduate degree is recognized in India through JNTU Kakinada and in Europe through Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden and globally through JNTU Kakinada and BTH. The
main objective of the programme is to enable the students to derive the advantage of getting exposed to expertise available in both the countries. This program enhances the future prospects of the students in a better
way both in India and abroad.
* Applications for admission into M.Tech/ M. Sc. - Signal Processing under DDP will be processed jointly by JNTU Kakinada and Blekinge Institute of Technology.
* There will be no provision for students to discontinue the studies in the middle of the program and claim alternative degree.
* All Admissions are purely provisional and the university reserves the right to cancel the admission at any stage.

* ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
BE/BTECH/AMIE in ECE, EIE, AMIE (Electronics and Telecommunication Engg.) / AMIETE (Electronics & Telematics Engg.) or Equivalent
* ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Education in “English” as medium of instruction from secondary (10th Class) and Intermediate level (10+2) to the university level.
* STRUCTURE OF DOUBLE DEGREE POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM
The program is structured in 4 semesters (24 months) in such a way that, student pursue their education both in India and Sweden.
I- Semester at JNTU Kakinada, II-Semester & III-Semester at BTH, Sweden, IV-Semester is open for choice of students, they can choose JNTU Kakinada, India or BTH, Sweden.
* FEES STRUCTURE
Rs. 1, 25,000 /- for the entire program (includes hostel room rent for first semester).
* VISA REQUIREMENTS
There will be no tuition fee charged at Blekinge Institute of Technology, Sweden for their period of study at Sweden under Memorandum of Cooperation ( MoC ) with JNTU Kakinada. Students should be able to fund their
living expenses only for the stay at Sweden. Students should be able to show a minimum financial requirement of SEK 7300 per month for the entire planned study period. Documentation certifying one’s own must be
provided at the time of applying visa. (For 12 months--- SEK 87600 approximately equivalent to Rs 6, 00,000/- & for 18months --- SEK 131400 approximately equivalent to Rs 9, 00,000/- is financial requirement as per
the rules of Swedish Migration Board). However, the actual living expenses may be much less and depends on the individual style of living. For further details check www.migrationsverket.se

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in association with Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) launched its B. Ed. (Special Education) programme on Sunday through distance mode in the area of hearing impairment, mental retardation and visual impairment.

The duration of the programme is two years and the students keen in joining it should have Bachelor's Degree from any University Grants Commission (UGC) recognized University and have a minimum of two years' experience in a special school environment in any disability area after graduation.

Preference would also be given by IGNOU to the candidates who would fulfill any one of the following criteria - be a parent of a child with disability, be a person with disability, posses an RCI-recognized diploma in special education, have undergone bridge course of RCI or have completed RCI recognized foundation course.

The next Professional Competence Course (PCC), Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC), Final (old and new course), Management Accountancy Course (MAC Part - I). Insurance and Risk Management (IRM) and International Trade Laws and World Trade Organization (ITL & WTO) Examinations of the Institute will be held from 5th November 2009 to 19th November 2009 in 118 cities in India and three cities abroad. Maharashtra University of Health Sciences New Distance Course

Maharashtra University of Health Sciences to start new distance course in medicine with collaboration of University of Sydney.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is to be signed between the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and the University of Sydney.

The MoU has to be signed to offer International Postgraduate Paediatric Certificate (IPPC) programme which is equivalent to Diploma in Child Health.

Once the MoU is signed, the University of Sydney will approach Medical Council of India for its nod.

The IPPC programme will be a one-year part time distant education programme. Students having MBBS degree are eligible for the course

The education department has sanctioned 13 new divisions for the science stream and 17 in the commerce stream at 11 junior colleges in Mumbai.
For Thane, the department has sanctioned three new divisions in science, four in commerce and one in arts. These divisions will be permanently unaided. The extra divisions will result in an additional 1,160 seats in the science stream and 1,360 commerce seats for Mumbai. For Thane, this will mean an additional 240 seats in science, 320 in commerce and 80 in arts.
An education department official said the government had cleared the proposals of the colleges that had applied for extra divisions.
