BIRAC invites proposal under BIG scheme to encourage and support Biotech Entrepreneurs

The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) scheme is for potential entrepreneurs from Academia, start-ups or an Incubatee (Researchers, PhDs, Medical degree holders, Biomedical Engg. Graduates) who have an exciting idea which may be in the nascent and planning stage and there is an unmet need for mentorship and initial funding. The Biotechnology Ignition Grant would help to support and nurture these high risk early starters and their concepts.

The aim of BIG scheme is to provide support to entrepreneurs to validate proof of concept and enable creation of spin-offs

Eligibility:

i. Biotechnology start-ups / entrepreneurs OR Incubatee; Students, Academician and Scientists (Research Institute/University/Public, Not for profit Organization, Private funded) with an exciting idea which may be in the nascent and planning stage can apply under this scheme.

ii. The Applicant must be either an Incubatee located in an incubator OR have a registered company with a functional R&D laboratory

iii. If the registered company does not have a functional Laboratory of its own, then it should be incubated in an Incubator which has a functional laboratory.

a. A Company is defined as one which is registered under the lndian Companies Act 1956 and in which more than 51 % of the ownership is held by lndian Citizens (including NRls)

b. Start-up Company is defined as one which is incorporated in the last 3 years.

Applications are invited from Indian citizens for admissions to Ph.D,M.Sc,M.Tech (Sponsored seats) and M.Tech (Research) Programmes for the academic year 2012-2013 at NITK Surathkal

Eligibility :

Admission to a Ph.D. Programme shall be open to candidates who have passed the prescribed qualifying
examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, or
not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/
university examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this
prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 6.0 or 55% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates. The prescribed
qualifying examination is as follows:
a. For Ph.D. in Engineering/Technology – Master’s degree in relevant field.
b. For Ph.D. in Science /Humanities, Social Sciences & Management – Master’s degree in relevant field.

Employed professionals having experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph.D. Programme will be
considered under External Registration and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own location of work.
A minimum of one semester residential requirement is to be completed by all external registrants.

M. Tech (Sponsored):
Admission to a M.Tech. Programme shall be open to Indian nationals who have passed the prescribed qualifying
examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, OR not less than
60% marks. However, this prescribed minimum shall be a CGPA of 6.0 OR 55% marks for SC/ST candidates. The candidates
must have minimum of two years of full-time work experience in the sponsoring organization.

M. Tech(Research):
Admission to a M.Tech. (Research) Programme shall be open to Indian nationals who have passed the prescribed
qualifying examination with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system, OR
not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/university
examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum
shall be a CGPA of 6.0 OR 55% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates. Valid GATE score is essential for scholarship
seats. The number of seats are flexible subjected to the availability of research funding.

M. Sc in Chemistry/Physics:
Admission to M.Sc. Programme in Chemistry/ Physics shall be open to Indian nationals who have passed a Bachelor's
degree in Chemistry /Physics with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 6.5 in the 0-10 scale grading system,
or not less than 60% marks in the aggregate (taking into account the marks scored in all the subjects of all the public/ university
examinations conducted during the entire prescribed period for the degree programme). However, this prescribed minimum
shall be a CGPA of 6.0 or 55% marks in the aggregate for SC/ST candidates.

IGNOU launched a new online Appreciation Programme on Sustainable Management of Biodiversity (APSMB) for July 2012 session.

The programme shall be available online on the SAVE (Sustainable Action and Virtual Education) platform. it is a complete virtual learning environment suite covering all the activities form registration to programme delivery.

Programme Objectives : The conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity and the eradication of extreme poverty are two of the main global challenges. It has been recognized by the international community that these two challenges are intimately connected, and require a coordinated response. The sustainable management of biodiversity is one of the most important challenges facing humanity; one that requires the active participation of dedicated professionals who are committed to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject. Our generation has the unenviable task of making hard, possibly irrevocable, decisions on sustainable management of biodiversity at local, regional and international levels. In this context, the aim of this Appreciation programme is to provide a critical and conceptually sophisticated understanding of biodiversity science and the socio-economic, political, cultural and institutional environments within which sustainable management of Biodiversity and policy decisions are made. This programme promote awareness and capacity building for sustainable management of biodiversity for mainstreaming biodiversity into the daily lives of individuals, recreating the relationship between people and nature, securing the linkages between forests, rivers, and the sea and taking actions in a global context.

Eligibility : Graduates in any discipline or its equivalent.

For M.Tech

For admission to full time course a valid GATE score is essential. The application form and details regarding eligibility for each course are uploaded on the website: www.dce.edu. Separate application forms must be submitted for courses offered by each department. The reservation for SC/ST/OBC category will be as per the approved policy of the Government of Delhi.

To Apply :
Applications are also invited from NRI's Foreign Nationals and Persons of Indian Origin in 17 M.Tech. Full Time programs for 5% seats earmarked for them on and above normal intake. The admission under this category will be made on the basis of merit / score in GRE.
