Based on an All-India competition that was conducted during the first week of April 2009 at Pune, Ms. Aarti Reddy, a 16 year old has bagged the prestigious United World Colleges (UWC) Scholarship (www.uwccommindia.net) for 2 years of education at Li Po Chun UWC, Hong Kong. (www.lpcuwc.edu.hk)
The award valued at approx. Rs. 16 lakhs will contribute towards the tuition fees, boarding costs and books.
Aarti is one of the four students in the entire country selected for the United World colleges located in Costa Rica, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and United States of America.
Talking to this correspondent, Aarti could not contain her excitement about the role of being a cultural ambassador for India in the multicultural environment of the Li Po Chun UWC, wherein students from over 70 countries are selected through an extremely competitive selection process.
United World Colleges (www.uwc.org) is a unique organization. It is the only global educational NGO that brings students together from all over the world, selected from within their own countries, on merit and regardless of their ability to pay. These students come together at one of twelve United World Colleges that aim to foster international understanding and peace.
The UWC concept was conceived in the 1950s at the height of the Cold War. It was a bold plan, a realization of the dream of German educationalist Kurt Hahn.
Hahn believed that much could be done to overcome religious, cultural and racial misunderstandings and avoid conflicts if young people from all over the world could be brought together. It was felt that students aged 16 to 18 would be grounded in their own cultures but still impressionable enough to learn from each other.
