Data Analysis in Social Sciences programme in TISS

Social scientists and research scholars engaged in social research generally compile a large body of useful data. Lacking proper knowledge and training in analytical techniques and computer programmes, they are often at a loss to make sense of the data they have collected. They face such questions as which procedure of analysis to follow and what techniques to apply for data on hand, what do the results show, how are the results to be interpreted and explained, how are the findings to be reported, etc. This Programme is intended to help social scientists and research scholars find answers to these and similar questions. It seeks to enhance social researchers? knowledge of data analysis, both qualitative and quantitative, and trains them in the use of computer software for social research.

The specific objectives of the Programme are to:
1. To familiarise the participants about the nature of social research data and the the problems and prospects of qualitative and quantitative data.
2. To train the participants in the use of appropriate modes of analysing quantitative and qualitative data.
3. To help the participants understand the assumptions of applied statistical techniques.
4. To familiarise the participants with various software packages for social sciences
5. To provide the participants with hands-on training in the use of computer for data analysis.
