IIT Madras Ph.D. and M.S. programmes

Applications are invited for admission to Ph.D. and M.S. programmes under regular full time [with/without Half-time Teaching / Research Assistantship (HTRA)] and part-time/external in the engineering departments of Aerospace, Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Chemical, Civil, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical, Engineering Design, Mechanical, Metallurgical & Materials and Ocean and in the departments of Chemistry, Humanities & Social Sciences, Management Studies, Mathematics and Physics.


Eligibility: A) Minimum Academic Qualifications Required for Admission :

1. Ph.D in Engineeing areas :

Master's degree in Engineering / Technology (M.S/M.Tech/M.E) with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent. Master's degree in Sciences (M.Sc.) with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent ( CGPA 6.5 ) with a valid GATE score or NET (UGC / CSIR) Fellowship from the current year in relevant areas.

2. Ph.D in Science and Humanities :

Master's degree in Sciences / Social Sciences / Commerce and Humanities subjects with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent ( CGPA 6.5 ) with avalid GATE score or NET (UGC / CSIR) Fellowship from the current year in relevant areas. Master's degree in Engineering / Technology / MBA of IIMS or equivalent with first class or minimum 60% marks or equivalent for certain areas.

NOTE : Candidates with background and qualifications in allied Engineering subjects other than those specifically mentioned above may also be considered for admission to Ph.D programme with the recommendation of the concerned department and with the approval of the Senate.

Admission of B.tech/B.E. Candidates

Candidates who have qualified for the award of Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology with exceptionally good academic record in the prescribed disciplines will be considered for direct admission to Ph.D programme subject to the following conditions :

If the Candidate happens to be a B.Tech degree holder from an IIT, he/she should have qualified for the degree in the top 25% of his/her branch.

In the case of Bachelor's degree holder in Engineering or Technology from an University, he/she should have qualified for the degree among the top 10 rank holders of the University.

The Candidate must be eligible for admission to Post-graduate programme with a valid GATE score.

Full-time candidates alone are eligible to be considered for such direct admission. Candidates admitted will be eligible for Half-time Teaching/ Research Assistanship of Rs 5,000/- p.m.

B) Project Staff Admission

Candidates working in Sponsored Research and Consultancy Projects in Departments / Centres of this Institute as Project Staff / aspiring for appointment in projects may also apply for Ph.D programme. The minimum qualifications needed are :

i) Ph.D in Engineeing areas :

Master's degree in Engineering / Technology (M.S/M.Tech/M.E) with first class or minimum 60% marks (CGPA 6.5) or equivalent. Master's degree in Sciences (M.Sc.) with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent ( CGPA 6.5 ) with avalid GATE score or NET (UGC / CSIR) Fellowship from the current year in relevant areas.

ii) Ph.D in Science and Humanities :

Master's degree in Sciences / Social Sciences / Commerce and Humanities subjects with a first class or a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent ( CGPA 6.5 ) with avalid GATE score or NET (UGC / CSIR) Fellowship from the current year in relevant areas. Master's degree in Engineering / Technology / MBA of IIMS or equivalent with first class or minimum 60% marks or equivalent for certain areas.


Application procedure: Application and Admission Brochure may be obtained by post with a request enclosing a self-addressed envelope (26 x 18 cm) and a demand draft for Rs.250V- (Rs.125/- in the case of SC/ST/PD/Female candidates) drawn in favour of "IIT Madras", payable at Chennai to the Deputy Registrar (Acad.), IIT Madras, Chennai - 600 036 on or before 17.10.2008 by post and upto 24.10.2008 in person.

The envelope must be superscribed as "Request for application for Ph.D/M.S. Programme". Candidates applying for more than one department should submit a separate application for each department.
